Apps to use with Students

App is short for application. Apps can either be software that exists only on the internet, or are simply just shortcuts to websites.

Add Ons are accessories that you can add to a piece of software or an app that increases its capabilities.

Extensions let you add new features to your browser that extend its capabilities.

Extensions that you might want to install on your students' devices or show them how to install:

Keep Awake to keep your students’ chromebooks ON for presentation times or conferences

APPS:
The following apps with a * in front, are apps can be downloaded from the Google Play Store  in the Chrome app section and may be “pushed” to your students from the Play Store quickly and easily as long as you have a list of students’ email addresses. Other apps, extensions, & downloads from the Web Store will need to be loaded on to each individual student’s google account either by you or if you take the time in class, your students could do it with your instruction.

*Google Classroom Nate will set up your Google Classroom, but you will need to either add all of your students or show them how to add themselves. You can give students "assignments" that you've created either in Google Docs or from other apps, or just post directions, give links to websites for practice in the "stream", or even write messages to the class and let them respond with posts. Everything gets sent directly to your drive & also an email will be sent to you letting you know if a student has turned in their assignment.

Blogger A great way to get info out to parents. Make a blog of your own & link student blogs to it. Get your students to post pictures of work, projects, or screencasts of assignments you’ve given. Students can journal daily to let you know what their day was like. Comments can be set to be monitored by you before they go live to prevent inappropriate comments. Here's a link to my blog in case you want to check it out Robin Mistic's 2nd Grade Blog

Socrative Teacher sets up a free account & can enter any assignment or tests in a multiple choice format. Students enter at Socrative Student and take the test or do the assignment on the site. You can view live results as they test, and it grades it for you. Printable.

Schoology Another way to give students sites, info, tests, worksheets...It will allow you to import rubrics and grades student work for you. Questions may be given in many different formats. It also allows you to return student work for correction. There are a few ‘hoops' to jump through to verify your account for students under the age of 13, but may be worth the effort. Many of our high school teachers are starting to use Schoology. Pete Ofstedahl would be an excellent reference person.

PowToons A fun alternative to a Google presentation, this is a fun slide show. Students need their own accounts, but just need an email address, no other personal info

Glogster Free account, of course there is an upgraded version. You can make posters online. Format is pretty good, it’s kind of glitchy, Lucid Press is better.

Lucid Press can be downloaded from the Chrome Web Store. Students can create cool postcards, menus, pamphlets... and print them.

*Lucid Chart great tool to make writing idea webs or help students link ideas together to write paragraphs. Printable for students to use during writing time.

*Storybird Sign up for your free account, you will need to add each of your students. Students can add premade pictures to their writing, writings can only be viewed by you. Other students in your classroom can read other students’ writings from students enrolled in your classroom after they have been “published”. Teacher can comment on writings at any time. There is not a print option, but you can screen-shot or use Snag-It to print.

*DogoNews A great current events app that has new info on it weekly related to events kids are interested in.

*iStorybook E-books with audio so students can read or listen. Most are pretty easy stories, so more for K-1, maybe 2nd grade

*Grammaropolis Only some of the books are free (Nouns), but the tutorial links across the top bar all work & the videos all work, if you're looking for a fun grammar option

*IXL 2nd & 3rd grade use the Language Arts portion in a paid subscription, however if you are interested in just a quick practice session for students, they can do a practice set of about 20 questions a day in any category in Math or Language Arts. If interested speak with Lorraine about a paid subscription.

*Kahn Academy requires parental permission for students to use. Each student must actually sign up at home with a parent & allow you to be a mentor teacher to them. I just signed up for an account for myself, there are TONS of great videos & screencast examples for every imaginable math topic you might want to teach.

*Matific has some great math practice. You have to set up a free account and add all your students and give them assignments.

Other websites you may be interested in:

AR book finder if you have unlabeled books in your classroom & you don't know if they are AR books or what level AR books you have, this is the resource for you!

Go Noodle Need a brain break for your kids, log in with a free account & access lots of songs to dance & move. Project to your smart or mimio board for some music & movement time!

Kahoot It (Teacher) create a free teacher account and create fun game show like review lessons, or borrow other teachers' lessons & make them your own! Students access by joining (they type in a code that you give them) from Kahoot Kids

Moby Max Don't use the app, but our school has a district license to use the website. Its a great place to do reinforcing math skills, vocabulary work, and reading & language practice. There are also MCA practices. I would not recommend the fact master due to lack of their regulation of "tries". Students do a pretest to start at the appropriate level. Question difficulty is hard, so expect students to start at a fairly low level.

Xtra Math You can register for a free account and have to enter all your students’ names. When they go to the site, they type in your classroom code to enter your room. It then will track students’ progress through addition, subtraction, multiplication & division. You can decide where you want them to start, but that aspect is limited.

Ten Mark Register for a free teacher account, you will then create a class & add your students’ names. You can give them assignments

Spelling City You can register for a free account and have to enter all your spelling words for students to practice. Students can search for your name and practice without logging in.

Spelling Stars (thank you Jamie Hoffman for finding this!) You can register for a free account and will need to add all your students and assign them spelling lists from premade lists, or enter your own lists. This online spelling program gives pretests & postests & grades them for you. Unfortunately the practices are not that great & I haven’t been able to get lists to print from student devices, unless I screen shot or use SnagIt. A fun, quick writing activity. Teacher needs to create an account & add students' names, then give the kids the code generated & they will be allowed to enter your classroom.

Little Bird Tales A fun writing activity. Teacher needs to create an account & add students' names, then give the kids the code generated & they will be allowed to enter your classroom.

Storyline Online No account needed to listen to famous actors & actresses read stories

We Give Books You can register for a free account, make it something easy & different from your other accounts, give your log in & password to your students & they can all read on your account, at the same time. If they aren’t signed in, fewer books are available.

Magic Tree House fun games and exploratory questions about the books, no log in needed

Typing Web You can register for a free account. Then add all your students’ names. It will track student progress for you.

Oxford Owls  Teachers register for free account, there are lots of resources on the site for teachers to uses, but also lots of E-books for kids to read.

Epic Books Free teacher registration, students can use your registration as a GUEST or you can add your kids’names under your profile. Lots of E-books for reading or listening to.

Wonderopolis For your children with inquiring minds, there are videos about the wonder of the day and they can explore previous wonders. Be sure to check them, some of the videos may not be appropriate

E-Pals Free to register, you will need to create a profile & what you are willing to do with your partner classroom, such as skype, email, exchange info…. you can search for other classrooms in the US or in other countries.
They are currently working on switching their site to upgrade it in August.

National Geographic Kids no registration needed, students can research animals & read about current scientific events

Blackduck's Second Grade Website I have lots of other fun websites linked to our Second Grade Website, most are appropriate for second graders but many are good for multiple grade levels! Use what fits your classroom!
